Albert Bierstadt- The Artist
Best known for his large but intricate landscape paintings, Albert Bierstadt, was a German-American painter of the 19th century. From a very young age, Bierstadt showed a deep affinity towards art. In his youth, he would often create crayon sketches that would draw enough attention. At the age of 21, Bierstadt started painting with oil paints and found his calling. He went to Germany in 1853 to study painting for several years. When he returned to New Bedford in 1857, he taught painting for a few years and later decided to devote his time to his own paintings.
His paintings generally portray the splendid scenic beauty of the American West. He extensively traveled and took part in several journeys of the Westward Expansion to watch and paint the scenery. Albert Bierstadt was one of the leading landscape painters of his time.
Albert Bierstadt’s School Of Art
Albert Bierstadt was a member of the second generation of the Hudson River School of art. This American art movement originated during the mid-19th-century. It consisted of like-minded landscape painters. Romanticism greatly influenced them, and one can find its effects in their detailed landscape paintings of the Hudson River Valley. The artists who were a part of the second generation of the Hudson River School would travel to newer locations like the American West, the Maritimes, and even South America.
This school of art acknowledged artist Thomas Cole as their founder. Upon his untimely death in 1848, emerged the second generation of the movement. Artists like John Frederick Kensett, Frederic Edwin Church were members of this generation. Owing to their immense attention to details and the portrayal of almost glowing lighting in their paintings, their artworks were often considered examples of Luminism.
One of the renowned artists of the second generation of Hudson River School was Albert Bierstadt. He was practically a celebrity during his time. He implemented the techniques he learned from the Düsseldorf School of Painting in almost all his paintings. The size of his artworks drew a lot of amazement from the viewers. He excelled in portraying the live locations exactly like they were. They were not short of any picture captured by a camera. Some of his most famous paintings include: 'The Majesty of the Mountains,' 'Yosemite Valley,' 'The Portico of Octavia,' and 'The Rocky Mountains.'
