Who Was Claude Monet?

Popularly known as the father of French Impressionist painting, Oscar Claude Monet was born in the 9th arrondissement of Paris on 14th November 1840 to Claude Adolphe Monet and Louise Justine Aubree Monet. From an early age, Monet developed a passion for art and wanted to become an artist. His locality already knew him as the fine charcoal artist who sold his caricatures for ten to twenty francs.

He joined Le Havre Secondary School of the art in 1851 and started taking his first drawing lessons from the French artist Jacques-François Ochard. He met his mentor Eugène Boudin around 1856 and gradually developed a fascination with open-air landscapes in oil paints. With the death of his mother in 1857, Monet left school.

In his later life, Monet dedicated all his time to creating vast landscape art pieces that portrayed the beauty of the French countryside. He had a knack for painting the same scene repeatedly to capture the play of light and the effect of season changes. In 1883, Monet moved to Giverny in northern France, where he bought a house and property and started to work on his most famous series of water lily paintings.

Impressionism

The title of Claude Monet’s painting- ‘Impression, Soleil levant’ meaning ‘Impression, Sunrise, first exhibited in Salon des Refuses in 1874, is the origin of the term ‘Impressionism’. This art movement originated in 19th century France. Open-air landscape compositions using thin and small but visible brush strokes, focusing on the detailed portrayal of the subtle nuances of light, were the signature style of Impressionist paintings. The growing popularity of this art movement later led to the origin of post-impressionism.
