What are Digital Art Prints?
With the advancement of technology, we have started to reap its benefits in every sphere of life- and art is not an exception to this. The art that is created with the help of digital tools and software's is known as digital art. Computer art or Multimedia art are two other names associated with it. Canvas prints of such artworks are known as digital art prints. Unlike most other art forms, this is a relatively new genre, but quite an impressive one!
Evolution of Digital Art
Digital art emerged in the 1960s when John Whitney- the ‘father of computer graphics’-helped create the world’s first computer art. Ever since then, digital art, just like its counterparts, has kept evolving through the years.
The 1960s
In the early 1960s operating a computer wasn't as easy as it is now. They were complex and expensive devices, which is why most of the art of this period was created by scientists and mathematicians who had themselves built and handled the machines- who were interested in exploring the creative side of a computer. Much of the work of this period was geometric, owing to the limiting nature of the available output devices. Frieder Nake's 'Hommage à Paul Klee 13/9/65 Nr.2' (1965) represents the 1960s.
The 1970s
The Slade School of Art was the first to establish an ‘Experimental and Computing Department’ in the early 1970s. Few traditional artists were interested in the logical process involved in computer art and started learning to program. Paul Brown, who studied at the Slade from 1977-79, successfully developed a tile-based image generating system.
The 1980s
With the advent of Apple and Microsoft, computers were now readily available. You can note the use of computer graphics and special effects in the films of the time. Paint software packages became very popular, and digital art became comparatively easier.
The 1990s to the present
Digital art has now become an extensively used form of art and illustration. With PCs, touchscreen laptops, tablets, and phones, every traditional artist is venturing into the field of digital art. Owing to its accessible nature, many people use digital art prints to beautify their homes.
